Female musicians have been around since the beginning of all music being composed. However, due to gender inequality in the past most female composers go unrecognized. Following is a couple of female musicians that impacted the music industry.
Billie Holliday
Billie Holliday is widely recognized as a jazz phenomenon. She was able to pave the road for mainstream female musicians, as she was one of the first women to sign to a major record label. She was able to change the ignorance of other jazz artists as her ability to sing proved that women were able to sing just as well as men if not better. She also was able to do this with no formal music training making her idolized by fellow female artists.
Cher
Cher is a pop icon and still is holds the record for the most successful tour of all time. Before Cher no female was able to tour at that level internationally. Cher was important to the advancing of females in the music industry through her versatility and ability to make a copious amount of quality music. This forced record labels to start viewing more female musicians that reflected Cher’s style of music.
Madonna
Madonna is the most successful female artist in history. She was able to sell the fourth most albums of all time only being topped only by Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles. Madonna. She was able to prove that women have the ability to dominate the billboards and also sell more copies than male artists.
Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston possibly might have the greatest musical voice of all time. She has the ability to sing powerfully while maintaining a sound that is unmatched. She impacted the music industry through various ways but was renown for her ability to perform live. She opened up doors for female artists, as venues still did not recognize the vocal power of some women.
