Sex appeal has gained importance in modern music.  Today in pop culture a majority of female musicians are following this trend and understand this concept. Many female musicians have even changed their appearance just to adhere to public demand of sexuality.  The increasing rate of sexual themes has resulted in many different responses from the feminist community.  This topic splits up feminists as some cultural feminist don’t have much of a problem with the rise of sexuality in music.  They believe that women should have the right to express themselves in any way they want to as long as it is their choice.  Most feminists tend not to agree with the increased use of sex appeal, because they feel it objectifies women and conflicts with sexual morality

Woman dont represent "influential music" well, as males almost double females in the top 100 billboard hits every year.  Recently however in 2014 females have been killing the charts and represent 7 of the top 10 positions currently.

When people think of the music industry it is common to forget about positions other than an artist.  Women don’t hold these positions in comparison to men in the music industry as most managers, agents, and producers are male.  The industry does not readily accept females into positions other than performing.  The inequality of the music industry can be seen by various examples.  The manager of Florence and the Machine, Maried Nash, demonstrated that if you are a male that hangs around musicians you are part of the entourage, but if you are a female you are automatically a groupie.  Florence also revealed that if you are a female looking to do work with another writer for a song you have to justify it within the label whereas a male does not.  This not only supports the fact that there is inequality in the music industry, but also sometimes labels limit female musician's careers as they are not able to have creative control in some cases. Another example of inequality in the music industry can be seen through music videos.  In music videos females are objectified often persuaded into doing things just to make them appear sexier.  Dawn Shadforth is a female music video director and she has seen inequality first hand.  She stated that sometimes directors would have a hidden agenda to over sexualize music videos.  An example she gave was an experience she had filming a music video with two girls dancing half naked around a man.  She felt that the video was to revealing and had the females change clothes.  The song did not change at all and still when the music video was released other directors frowned on her for her decision.  She didn’t care about other people’s opinions, but she thinks it lost her other job opportunities that were previously open for her
